The United States Food & Drug Administration (US FDA) has given final approval to pharmaceutical and biotechnology major Wockhardt for marketing 25 mg, 50mg, 100mg and 200mg extended-release tablets of Metoprolol succinate, a cardiac drug. Metoprolol Succinate, a generic name for the brand Toprol XL, was used for 24-hour control of hypertension, treatment of angina and in improving survival after heart attack, a company release said.

Metoprolol succinate extended release was one of the most widely prescribed hypertension and angina drugs valued at over $1.1 billion in the United States. Wockhardt would be the second generic version of this technically demanding product in the US market, apart from the brand and its authorised generic.

The tablets will be manufactured at the US FDA certified formulation plant at Aurangabad.
