Waswo X. Waswo present the premiers of his series New Myths…a reinvention of tradition with a modern-day twist on 12th January – 7th February,2010 – 11.00 a.m. to 6 at Bombay Art Gallery, Ruia House, 19, Mount Pleasant Road, Malabar Hill, Mumbai 400006.

American expatriate artist Waswo X. Waswo exhibits large-scale hand-painted digital photographs inspired by Indian calendar art and the character of Krishna. Waswo’s photographs exalt the playfulness and romantic sexuality associated with Krishna, but also explores deeper and darker moods. The idea of myth, and its constant reinvention and metamorphosis, permeates the series.

Part spoof on “calendar art”, and part heartfelt introspection on the artist’s approach to values and belief, New Myths manages to cover a lot of ground. All of the photographs in this exhibition were created at Waswo’s studio in Udaipur, Rajasthan. They are archivally printed on imported Hahnemuehle Fine Art Paper, and hand-coloured by the artist’s assistants: Rajesh Soni, R. Vijay, and Shankar Kumawat.
