Mercedes-Benz launches super sports car SLS AMG in India
German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz launched its new super sports car SLS AMG in India with a price range between Rs 2 crore and Rs 2.5 crore.
The SLS AMG sporting gullwing doors is powered by a 6.3 litre engine and it can go up to a maximum speed of 317 km per hour and it can zoom to 100 km/h speed from zero in just 3.8 seconds. The advanced AMG 6.3-litre V8 motor makes the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG one of the most powerful sports cars in its class. The V8 high-speed engine with 6208cc capacity is a completely modified version of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 basic engine. The maximum output of 420 kW is achieved at 6800 rpm. The maximum torque rating of 650 Nm is reached by the 8-cylinder engine at 4750 rpm. Despite the increased load, engine weight has been reduced to 206 kg through targeted weight optimization, stated information provided on the company’s website.
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which belongs to EU 5 emission class, has a combined average fuel consumption of 13.2 l/100 km and combined CO2 emissions of 308 g/km.
For the first time, Mercedes-Benz and AMG have produced a vehicle with an aluminium chassis and body. This generates a significant weight saving compared with the traditional steel construction – as demonstrated by the effective DIN unladen weight of 1620 kg (without driver).
Opening the gullwing doors reveals the sweeping curved design with large opening angle. The extended bonnet, distinctive V-shaped front section and large air intakes as well as the low-position passenger compartment and the gently sloping rear of the vehicle are the embodiment of the Mercedes SLS AMG. SLS AMG features innovative bi-xenon front headlamps with daytime driving lights and LED indicator lamps.
As with a sports car, the LED reversing light and the LED rear fog lamps are centrally integrated. A robust rear bumper with diffuser and fully integrated tailpipes ensure an uninterrupted view of the wide rear tyres. The rear aerofoil, when retracted, blends seamlessly into the overall rear end design. As soon as the SLS AMG reaches a speed of more than 120 km/h, the rear aerofoil is automatically extended. It can also be activated manually at a lower speed by pressing a button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT.
The interior of the SLS AMG combines authentic motorsport functionality with legendary Mercedes-Benz safety standards. A range of fine materials, including nappa leather and real metal trim (real carbon trim available as an option), emphasise the exceptional design and hand-finished character of the SLS interior.
Design elements taken from aircraft construction are also reflected here – right down to the smallest detail. The AMG DRIVE UNIT with AMG E-SELECT selector lever mirrors the style of a jet control panel. The wing-shaped instrument panel featuring four distinctive air vents and the AMG instrument cluster with white-backlit round dials is commanding and distinctively puristic.
The use of single-tone designo Exclusive leather for the interior gives the SLS AMG an even more exclusive feel. There are four interior colours namely black, classic red, sand and porcelain to choose from. In order to accentuate the sportiness of the interior even more, the designo Exclusive leather upholstery is available in the following two-tone combinations: classic red/black, sand/black and porcelain/black. The designo Exclusive natural/braided leather upholstery in the designo light brown colour scheme looks particularly elegant and stylish.
COMAND APS multimedia system with hard-disk navigation, 6 GB memory for MP3 files, DVD video and LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system have been fitted in the SLS AMG.
As far as safety is concerned, SLS AMG features adaptive airbags and kneebags, seat-integrated sidebags and separate windowbags for driver and passenger. The 3-point seat belts with tensioners and belt-force limiters are included as standard for all Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG occupants. The safety system also boasts eight airbags: two adaptive airbags for driver and front passenger, one kneebag each for driver and front passenger, two sidebags integrated in the seats and two separate windowbags. The SLS body features outstanding rigidity and high deformation reserves which can absorb collision energy and thus protect the occupants from injury.
A large number of components supporting the integrated ADAPTIVE BRAKE system contribute to active safety to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The latter increases driving comfort and safety by working together with the ASR, ESP, ABS and BAS dynamic control systems to make it easier to perform critical manoeuvres successfully.
The AMG instrument cluster (including AMG main menu with RACETIMER) features two puristic round dials within the driver’s field of vision. They provide key information, including road speed, engine speed, fuel level and engine oil temperature. Between the round dials, the driver receives additional data, including kilometre reading, range, fuel consumption, driving distance, driving time and average speed. The instrument panel also features an upshift indicator, which uses seven LEDs to indicate the best time to change gear.
