An Idea for Mumbai

Idea Cellular, an Aditya Birla Group company, on Wednesday launched its mobile service in Mumbai circle making it the biggest single city launch by any telecom company.

Idea aims at providing citizens of the city superior connectivity with an initial network of over 1,000 cell sites. Idea Mumbai will operate on 1800 Mhz frequency riding on a pooled core switching network, with 2.75G capabilities and EDGE services.

"Mumbai is the commercial capital of India and merits world class mobile services. From today, Idea will set the mobile telephony standards in Mumbai. This is a landmark day for Idea. The Mumbai launch bolsters our position as a leading telecom player in India. We have aggressive growth plans for Idea," Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said.

Idea has over 28 million customers across 11 operational circles. Idea has an additional 10 licenses, of which spectrum has been allotted in Bihar, Jharkand, Orissa and Tamil Nadu, which will all be operational before the end of the financial year. With the proposed merger of Spice, Idea's footprint will then cross 90% of the national mobile telephony market. Mumbai today becomes the 12th service area to form part of IDEA's expanding reach.

Idea's network raises the bar and brings to Mumbai a 2.75G capable, 3G ready, scalable, high capacity network to provide a step-up audio and data experience. With the adoption of AMR-FR IDEA offers whisper clear audio clarity.

Idea's initial coverage of over 1,000 cell sites provides a luxury experience never before seen in any city launch anywhere in the world.  Coverage expander solutions have been deployed for traffic hotspots like rail routes and flyover junctions. Idea's coverage is designed to remain a step ahead of time.

Idea launches in Mumbai with over 60 "My Idea" exclusive service centres. In addition the company has rolled out 15,000 retail outlets.

Additionally a voice portal with subscription packs of the latest stock prices, ticketing services, horoscopes etc. add to the richness of services.
