After iPhone, will the Gphone ring?

July 18, 2008

Google's Gphone launch, which will operate on Google’s own software, is slated for a delayed launch towards the year-end.

According to the search engine, the handset will be available only around January-February owing to delay over mop-up of support of mobile operators and handset manufacturers.
Gphone, which has a tie-up with around 30 partners, may allow greater user control but unlike Apple, Google may not have have full control over the hardware. This may cause compatibility bottlenecks.

Rumours are doing the rounds that Google may price the Gphone around $100.

A source at Google said the Gphone, which calls for the involvement of handset manufacturers as well as mobile operators, was taking its time. “We're very, very close," he said.

In November last year, Google said it was tying up with the partners who would co-operate on a handset designed to give owners a greater control in particular types of web-based features that the phone would offer.

Google hopes the phone’s operating system – called Android – will help mop up more revenue from internet advertising, with more cellphone users having access to the web on the mobilephones.

Probably HTC will make the Gphone. A probable features list is:

  • Google maps, Gmail, calendar, ect
  • Gps powered
  • Run on Linux
  • Camera
  • Youtube
  • Wi-fi network
  • Video
  • Mp3; High Memory
