RCom slashes STD, local call rates

October 16, 2008

Anil Ambani group company Reliance Communications (RCom) has launched a new scheme that enables its subscribers to make STD calls at Re 1 and local calls at 50 paise per minute. On the STD front, the GSM major has reduced call rates by 33 per cent from the earlier Rs 1.50 per minute and a 50 per cent reduction on the local calls.

RCom has launched a 'Life Time Jaadu Pack' that enables users to make calls by making a one-time payment of Rs 550. Subscribers can make the calls by topping up the mobile account with recharge vouchers, starting with a minimum of Rs 10.

"We are indeed happy to offer yet another value for money plan this festive season. Our subscribers with lifetime validity can now recharge just once with Jaadu pack special to get local calls at just 50 paise per minute and STD calls to any phone anywhere in India at just Re 1 for life," RCom President (Wireless Business) S P Shukla said.

The existing tariff in the industry for STD calls is upwards of Rs 1.50 per minute, while that for local calls that is upwards of Re 1 depending on the various tariffs and plans various service providers.

According to analysts this could be an emerging trend, with other service providers likely to launch similar schemes in the country. This would also result in the telecom tariffs sliding and reaching a nadir, probably by the end of the year.
