BPL Mobile, the GSM service provider with operations in Mumbai circle, has launched the much-coveted 'BlackBerry Connect' services that provide push-mail services on non-BlackBerry services.
The move gains importance as the instant push-mail service that was popularised by Canada-based Research In Motion (RIM) was embroiled in a controversy with the Indian government seeking legal intrusion of data transferred over its network.
Under 'BlackBerry Connect' services, BPL Mobile will provide push-mail services like normal BlackBerry services. However, this does not require a BlackBerry handset but can be accessed on compatible data-enabled handsets.
BPL Mobile customers will get BlackBerry push mail services on selected number of handsets including Nokia 9300, 9300i, 9500, E50, E61, E61i, E62, E65, E70, E90 and Sony Ericsson P990, P910i, M600, M600i, W950, p1i, ASYS, M530W.
The company is offering the services under two plans – 'Plan 999' providing access to around 10 e-mail accounts with unlimited mails and 'Plan 499' with 10 e-mail accounts and download of 50 KB.
BlackBerry Connect services were earlier launched by Bharti Airtel, providing the services on Nokia 9500 Communicator, Nokia 9300 smartphone and Sony Ericsson P910i. Vodafone-Essar had also launched the services earlier providing the services on a host of handsets in the country.
* Netcore Solutions also launching a service, termed as poorman's BlackBerry, that instantly forwards mails from the user's e-mails — both corporate and personal IDs — as short messages (SMSs) to mobile handsets.
