Oral contraceptive pills by Mylan-Famy Care soon

August 7 , 2008

Oral contraceptive pills, numbering 22, will be developed by Mylan Inc, which has inked a pact with Famy Care Ltd, an Indian manufacturing company that makes women's healthcare products.

The pact also allows Mylan a right of first refusal for additional oral contraceptive products and certain additional markets, including Australia and Japan, where it has major presence. However, terms of the agreement were kept under wraps.

"Through our partnership with Famy Care, we have met another commitment by jacking up our portfolio to create a women's healthcare franchise," said Mylan vice-chairman and CEO Robert J. Coury.

"After working on this project for quite some time, we have found an outstanding partner in Famy Care, the world's largest manufacturer of oral contraceptives. Famy Care is a well-established and respected global company, deeply committed to quality and customer satisfaction. We're delighted to have completed this agreement with an organisation considered a world leader in generic contraceptives and we look forward to bringing these OC medicines to US customers as quickly as possible."

"We discussed tying up with a number of highly qualified companies, but Mylan clearly became the partner-of-choice," said Sanjeev Taparia, Famy Care's managing director. "We based our decision on Mylan's strong presence in the US, expanded global commercial footprint and its high quality and customer service standards."

Currently, the total US oral contraceptive market sales are estimated at $3.3 billion. Of the 42 oral contraceptive products available, 31 are sold generically.
