Indian tourism boom demands well-educated managers: Survey

“Indian Students choose the growing hospitality sector for wide international career choices”

Mumbai, April 4, 2008

Global career opportunities have opened up for Indian students in the Rs 160 trillion ($ 4 trillion) worldwide travel and hospitality sector.  More and more Indian students are opting to study this expanding field that globally employs 238 million people, and generates nearly 10 per cent of world GDP.

Over the last 4 years, over 150 Indian students have pursued an international hospitality management education at Les Roches International School of Hotel Management and Glion Institute of Higher Education, two of the world’s top three hospitality and hotel management schools based in Switzerland.

Mr. Michael Huckaby, Vice President of Laureate Hospitality Education, Montreux, Switzerland which operates the two premier schools, said, “The global Hospitality sector offers exciting careers across various segments and more Indian students are taking advantage of this global opportunity, perhaps inspired by the ‘Incredible India’ campaign.”

“Students from India can benefit immensely from the global job prospects offered by employers in the travel, hotel, restaurant and cruise-ship sectors.  We have found that Indian students educated in Switzerland find excellent career opportunities in India as well as in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America,” said Mr Huckaby.

Both Les Roches and Glion deliver the highest quality university-level hospitality education to develop leadership and managerial competencies for an amazingly diverse community of students coming from around the world.

“Within India, the hospitality sector is expected to rise to Rs 15 trillion (US$ 275 billion) in the next ten years. Well-educated management personnel will be crucial for offering travelers experiences at the highest international standards of the hospitality industry,” he added.

The hospitality sector in India has seen five consecutive years of double digit growth, and according to WTTC, by 2013 India will be the third-largest tourism market in the world.  The domestic hospitality sector is likely to see investments of over USD$11 billion in the next two years with 40 international hotel brands making their presence in the country in the next few years.

“As a result, both the domestic and the international hospitality sectors will offer great career opportunities for Indian students,” he added.

According to a survey by the UK-based market research firm Taylor Nelson Sofres, industry hiring managers rank Les Roches and Glion as being among the top three hospitality management schools in the world for an international career. Both schools have educated Indian alumni who have made their mark on the global hospitality sector.  Les Roches and Glion offer the highest quality hospitality education through a combination of carefully planned hands-on exercises designed to instill management competencies, a full range of academic subjects from general education through management theory, and professional internships.  Hiring managers also indicated in prior research that Les Roches and Glion students are likely to occupy the top 20% of executive positions within 5 to 10 years after graduation.

Mr. Huckaby said, “Les Roches and Glion students generally choose from a large range of international internships that allow them to work on at least two different continents during their studies.   In addition, they will interview with the leading hospitality organizations prior to graduation in order to gain permanent positions.   Most students have the luxury of choosing from among three or more job offers upon graduation, and can land in any of more than 40 countries around the world.”

Les Roches and Glion have a rich international faculty and student body with over 80 nationalities represented on each campus.  Both schools provide a structured and safe education environment to develop the full potential of each student on both a personal and professional level.

Glion offers a broad range of hospitality management programs in such fields as hotel management, event, sport, and entertainment management, and also offers specializations in marketing, finance and human resources. Les Roches specializes in all aspects of hotel management, offering programs in international hotel management and food and beverage management, as well as program specializations in marketing and finance. Les Roches is affiliated with the Swiss Hotel Association (hotelleriesuisse) and offers study abroad opportunities in Marbella, Spain and in Chicago, USA.
