Show off of power

The incident of firing that took place in the Mumbai suburb where one person was killed again brought to fore the delicate scenario of law and order. On the subsequent morning there was a 'Rail Roko' held by some Sikh activists at Mulund station. Though the stint lasted for just an hour, still it turned out to be a mess for some time. Especially the way the swords were being used to ensure that the shops will be closed, was a pathetic thing. No way should people take the law in their hands. There must be some respect about the law. Especially when everyone knew the bodyguard who opened fire in Mulund, arrested in Panvel, why there was a show of power. It has become a public habit that one should be violent as and when there is an opportunity.

Let it be the Gujjar issue in Rajasthan, gathering of the congress men in Mumbai and the Sikh unrest in Mumbai, there is an exhibition of violence that surely disturbs the public life. Beyond making it to the headlines it pays nothing but takes the social peace away. At a moment of time when the government is keen to save the people who has attacked on Kumar Ketkar's house, are we expecting too much, if we say that the government should take serious action against such muscle men?

Also who is responsible for the loss of manpower and property in all such incidents? There has to be a method to hold the wrongdoers liable for their acts. Long back a high court held liable the employee union for the losses caused by the strike. Also it was said that there the agitators are supposed to inform the authorities. However such norms are kept on the back burner and neither the agitators nor the police authorities try to implement the norms. However as we talk about the tough times in the light of social evils such as terrorism, inflation there is a need to put the systems in place and punish the shenanigans.
