Nine years of unquestioned rule of President Parvez Musharraf is over. Some may say he is left with no option but to resign and the others like him would however argue that the resignation was given in for the betterment of Pakistan. But the outcome remains the same; Mush is no more in the driving seat of Pakistan.
From the bloodless coup in 1999 to the attack on Lal Masjid this year, there are many events' Mush is to be 'blamed for.' There are talks that he won’t be charged with most of the acts he has committed. The outgoing President has negotiated a good deal it seems. Given the uncertainty in Pakistan, we suspect if there would be a stable government at the center. At the same time, it is highly likely that Mush will move out of Pakistan. Staying back in Pakistan can be fatal. The new government is made of parties having diverse interests and now working together with a common enemy called Musharraf. But as Mush exits, a drift in the government at center cannot be ruled out.
The worst positioned element in all this political turmoil is the ordinary Pakistani citizens, who are praying for law and order for decades, are still in the same state. Neither they have a say nor do they have recourse. Unfortunately the economic conditions are worsening. The resources are meant for the consumption of the armed forces and some more equals among equals. It is the food that has caused most of the revolts against the establishments. Pakistan is about the experience some such revolution in the near term. The worst scenario is division of Pakistan in three or more parts.
For now, the entire world is looking at Pakistan and how they move post President Musharraf resignation. Restoration of the democracy is just a possibility. But the world is prepared for anything that resembles democracy, as long as Pakistan keeps Osama and his followers at bay. May Pakistan live in piece… … |
