Yahoo! Inc is shutting down the Web's largest photo sharing service, Yahoo! Photos on September 20, and moving users to its second generation site Flickr. The Internet major is offering its present users an option to move over to other service providers including Kodak Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish or Photobucket. In a notification to the users, Yahoo! said: "For sometime now, we have supported two great photo sharing services, Yahoo! Photos and Flickr. But even good things come to an end, and we have decided to close Yahoo! Photos to focus all our efforts on Flickr — the award-winning photo sharing community that Time Magazine has called "completely addictive."
Yahoo! Photos will be officially closed down on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 pm PDT. "We are making the transfer real simple, and with a couple clicks we will automatically move your photos to Flickr or wherever you want them. You can also download your original-resolution photos back to your computer, or buy an archive CD from our featured partner (for users of the New Yahoo! Photos only)," it said. "All you need to do is tell us what to do with your photos before we close, after which any photos remaining on Yahoo! Photos will be deleted and no longer accessible," the notification added.
After 9 pm September 20 PDT, the company will delete all photos in Yahoo! Photos. At present, the service has tens of millions of customers.
Flickr is a second generation Web 2.0 photo sharing site and has grown to 4.5 per cent up from 3.7 per cent, and Yahoo was supporting Photos and Flickr over
the past two years. |
