TCS signs 10-year, $1.2 billion deal with Nielsen

October 18, 2007

Global IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has bagged a $1.2-billion full-services outsourcing contract from Nielsen Company, a global media and telecom company. This is the biggest contract awarded to an Indian IT company, while the earlier one was the $250-million ABN-Amro deal, also bagged by TCS.

"This is an important milestone not only for our company, but also for the country as this is the biggest outsourcing contract. The contract is a full services contract and we would provide services across the spectrum," TCS Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) S Ramadorai said.

The contract is spread over a 10-year period, and TCS will provide outsourcing services to the Netherlands-based company's global business process outsourcing (BPO), knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) and business transformation operations.

The company would provide the services from its global delivery centres. TCS will also "direct responsibility" for a Nielsen team based in Baroda, Gujarat that has developed information-management processes for Nielsen's retail measurement services.

The addition of this team will complement TCS' established Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) team and help to accelerate development of TCS' KPO service delivery platform. This development will enhance TCS' domain expertise and make it one of the largest KPO providers in India, working in areas like analytics and reporting and reference data management.

The company intends to put 350 personnel on the project, while it would also set up an innovation centre in Chennai. The new centre, apart from working for the client, would also be engaged in development of next-generation products.

TCS is also planning to open a new centre in Eastern Europe to service the deal. The company expects the deal to be accretive from the third quarter of the current fiscal.

TCS provides IT and operational processes and help Nielsen integrate and centralise multiple systems, technologies and processes on a global scale. It will also provide responsibility for certain finance and human resource business processes, which will be executed on a new BPO platforms built by TCS.

N Chandrasekaran, chief operating officer and executive director, TCS said: "This landmark agreement with Nielsen combines our traditional strength in IT services with our growing prowess in areas like infrastructure and enterprise transformation, consulting, and platform-based BPO. The engagement underlines not only our ability to efficiently run the business but also help transform it. We continue to deliver sustained business value to our customers and help them experience certainty."

The implementation of next generation technology platforms and processes will enable faster and enriched information service delivery for Nielsen.
