Stage set for the Classical rhythm festival

Mumbai, August 22

Starting today, Maharashtrians will follow the dance steps of Draupadi, Sita and Mandodari from epics Ramayana and Mahabhartha. Keli, a Mumbai based organization dedicated to the preservation, development and propagation of the traditional classical art forms celebrates its fifteenth year of existence.

A three-day festival, titled as Keli Classical Women’s Theatre Festival 2007, this extravaganza of classical dance art form will focus on Nangiar Koothu, a sanskrit theatre form which developed as a part of Koodiyattam tradition. To be held on 24th, 25th & 26th August at three different venues, Prithvi Theater, Nalanda Dance Research Centre (Juhu) and ICCUA Auditorium, University of Pune respectively, this will be a treat to watch for people who love art. Keli Classical Women’s Theatre Festival 2007, will feature three strong willed characters of ‘Pancha Kanyas’ ie., Draupadi, Sita and Mandodari in a traditionally choreographed presentation by Usha Nangiar, one of the most accomplished artists of the contemporary Koodiyattam stage.


Programme Schedule
Day 1 On Friday, 24th August, 2007 at Prithvi Theatre at 7.00 pm. Usha Nangiar and group will present Draupadi followed by Mizhavu Melam by V. K. K. Hariharan and Group
Day 2 On Saturday, 25th August 2007 (in association with Nalanda Dance Research Centre)at Nalanda Dance Research Centre, Juhu, at 6.30 pm. Usha Nangiar and group will present Sita.
Day 3 On Sunday, 26th August 2007 (in association with Centre for performing Arts, University of Pune) for at ICCUA Auditorium, University of Pune at 6.30 pm., Usha Nangiar and group will present Mandodari
Other participating Artists are : V. K. K. Hariharan, Kalamandalam Rajeev & Sreejith on Mizhau. Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan on Edakka and Kalamandalam Sangeetha on Thalam. Free Entry Passes available at Prithvi Theatre, Rhythum House, Giri Stores Matunga, three days prior to the Festival
