Tibet - China and the contours of capitalism

Tibet is burning. Chinese troops have already entered Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet. Globally people are keen to watch out how the People's War, the way Chinese authorities define the upswing, is handled by Chinese government. There may be multiple thoughts about the Tibetan issue. Some of the political thinkers and diplomat talk of Tibet's sovereignty and some of them term it as an internal issue of China. This is a truely sensitive issue. Tibet is one of the most sensitive issues between India and China and the apex Tibetan leader - Dalai Lama - is living in India for very many years.

India, being neighbour and a party with vested interest is keenly observing the developments. At a point of time when the elections are nearing and there is no clear majority in the Parliament the ruling government is very much unlikely to take any stance against the Chinese government. However the globe including India is watching the roads of Lhasa much carefully. The world though talks highly about China and the high economic growth it has been experiencing; nobody could ever forget the Tiananmen Square incident. The democracy lovers were killed in 80's by the roaring Chinese tanks. Chinese youth was massacred who happened to ask for democratic setup. In those days this was very much common. However things have changed a lot over a period of 25 years.

China has attracted hundreds of billions of dollars worth of investments in various projects across the length and breadth of the country. The investing community for a long has been talking about the Chinese policies and political environment for a long period of time underlining the Chinese walls they come across, though in a low voice. The Olympics is already facing some cultural issues that are not really conducive for some of the developed democratic nations. The world would want to see what happens when somebody wants to go against the Chinese government and its agenda. Especially, how the people at the receiving end are treated will be more than important for the investors from the USA and other developed the country.

One many wonder why we are discussing the commercial aspect when this is more a political issue than anything else. However, we here want to highlight the reality that the things have changed and when they change they change very many things. We talk about the bad aspects of monetisation of politics; however the monetisation of politics has been seen at local level. However, now we will come to know about the same issue, as to how things will emerge on international level, whether the money has a role to play in the politics at inter-national level.
