Pandago gelo re gelo!

Famous Marathi theatre and film personality Machhindra Kambli, passed away after suffering a heart attack on Sunday.

Kambli, 55, who hailed from the Malwan region of Maharashtra, was a well-known actor, producer and activist in the world of Marathi theatre. He is credited with popularising the Malwani dialect on the Marathi stage and Marathi movies.

He started his career as a back stage artist. In the initial years he was active in the inter- textile mill drama competition. He debuted the Marathi theatre decades back. The credit goes to renowned director Vijaya Mehta.

Subsequently he started his own production company- 'Bhadrakali.' His drama, 'Vastraharan', was immensely popular and featured a unique usage of Malwani, a dialect local to the Konkan region of the state, and his performances were known for his impeccable sense of comic timing.

After watching this drama, Late P.L. Deshpande, a famous playwrite and author of many books, commented, "This drama is all set to bring in a new trend in Marathi theatre." Needless to say, he was proved right.

His other noted dramas include, 'Kela tuka zala maka', 'Pandgo ilo re ilo', 'Yeva kokan aaplach aasa.' His recent production, 'Bhaiya hatpay pasari', is the most successful production of the year 2007, from commercial perspective.

Kambli, who was president of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad for over a decade, will also be remembered for his role as an activist in resolving problems faced by Marathi theatre. He was also known for his leadership skills and bringing forth talent in the industry.

He had dabbled in politics, was on the verge of producing a Marathi feature film.
